Character: Charlie

Two words: Acapella Nic. This whole a movie is a trip. We’ve got 1960s songs and poodle skirts as far as the eye can see. We’ve got Peggy Sue (Kathleen Turner) and Charlie (My sweet Nic) separated after Charlie has been unfaithful. Peggy Sue gets an invitation to their 25 year high school reunion and we get to see her getting dressed to go and hear her nervousness about going. Her dress has her receiving comments like ‘you’re a real blast from the past.’ The whole time everyone is asking about Charlie as she expected and we find out that Charlie and Peggy Sue were the Prom King and Queen.

I completely forgot that Jim Carrey is in this movie, too and he’s got your typical Jim Carrey smile. Except he’s cutting cocaine in the bathroom with his girlfriend in High School. They’re both single now. We hear lots of conversations reminiscing about old times between several people. In walks Charlie in all white. He clearly wants to talk to Peggy Sue. She does not feel the same. They announce the King and Queen of the reunion: Richard Norbit, geek to millionaire and Peggy Sue Bodell. She is embarrassed and doesn’t want to take the stage. She is crowned and as they play Peggy Sue passes out. This is where it gets interesting.

She wakes up in the nurses office at her old high school. We see her friend is young and Charlie arrives also young. He is also loud and obnoxious. She appears to have traveled back in time to 1960. Cue Tequila and amazing cars. She heads home and is so happy to see her mother, sister, as well as be back in her old room. She is freaking out a bit, but realizes that she has the opportunity to make changes now that she’s back.

She makes a few different decisions including sleepying with the mysterious art guy she had a crush on. Also, side note, THE CARS ARE ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. I have a thing for old cars. Charlie has a 1958 convertible blue Chevrolet Impala and SWOOOOOOOOOOOOOON. Anyway, this movie is fun and a bit of a love story, which is not my usual movie choice. Jim Carrey adds some great little snippets here and there. Nic has a bit of a nasaly voice when he is young and if he isn’t singing, I almost hate his character. Call me salty, but he is not cool and the mysterious art guy definitely is.

She keeps trying to find ways to go back to her own time and finds a way through her grandfather’s lodge club. Charlie shows up and ruins the thing. They sleep together and she wakes up in the hospital in her own time. All the changes have actually taken place. Charlie is in the hospital with her and they decide to try again to be together.

Fun fact: Nic did not want to do this movie but decided to do it after his uncle described it being like Our Town. He wanted to personalize his character, but his uncle denied it. Overall, if you are into old cars, cool time travel blunders and just light-heartedness, give this one a watch.

I chose Jigglypuff for this one as Nic sings a lot in this movie. Don’t forget to check out the artist’s other Pokemon gems. https://pokemonxniccage.com
